The name Ryde originates from the Aboriginal word “ridh-ay” meaning reed swamp. ‘Ridh-ay’ was used by Aborigines of the Wallumattagal clan, who inhabited the area and harvest reeds that grew abundantly along the riverbanks.
The Municipality of Ryde was proclaimed on 17 January 1871. In 1895, the Council was amalgamated with the Municipality of Hunter’s Hill and the Ferrers and McLeods land Districts. The new council was proclaimed as a City on 23 May 1934.
The name Ryde is linked to a number of local street names which include: Dundas Road , which is named after Colonel William Dundas; Elizabeth Street, which was originally known as the ‘Elizabeth Vale’ Estate; Derby Street, which marked the residence of Mrs Mary Cook in 1883-1884; Margaret Street, named after the wife of Governor Phillip Gidley King.
