Putney was named after the town of Putney on the River Thames in England.
The name ‘Putney’ was given to this suburb when it was gazetted in 1886, but the origin of that particular name is not widely known or acknowledged by officials at Ryde Council. It may have been named after Sir Ralph Fletcher’s home Putney Paddocks, which was situated opposite the Imperial Hotel on Broadway (now known as Parramatta Road).
The suburb of Putney is entirely residential and contains no commercial area. The only access to the suburb is via Eastwood. Several bus services pass through each hour. There are no train links in Putney; the closest station is at Eastwood.
West Ryde is the next suburb along from Putney. Eastwood is approximately 2 kilometres away by road or around 600 metres via an underground pedestrian pathway that runs under the Parramatta River. We don’t mind the occasional lunch break at Putney Park, do its leafy trees and peaceful nature.
