What Is Data Cabling?

Data cabling is the fixed network wiring that carries internet and data around your home or business. Instead of relying on Wi-Fi, a data cable runs from your modem, router or NBN connection box to a wall socket (a data point) in another room, giving that device a direct, hardwired connection.

A hardwired connection is faster, far more stable, and immune to the interference, congestion and thick-wall dead spots that plague Wi-Fi. For anyone working from home, gaming, streaming 4K, or running a business network, properly installed data cabling is the single biggest upgrade to internet reliability you can make.

Our Data Cabling Services

Data point installation

New Cat6 or Cat6a wall points (RJ45 sockets) wherever you need a hardwired connection, from a single study point to multiple rooms.

Structured cabling

Complete network cabling for new builds, renovations and office fit-outs, run back to a central communications cabinet or patch panel.

NBN lead-in and relocation

Running data cabling from your NBN connection box to where you actually want your internet, or relocating an NBN outlet to a better position.

Home office and work-from-home networks

Dedicated cabling so your home office runs as reliably as a corporate one, with no Wi-Fi dropouts mid-meeting.

Wi-Fi access point cabling

Hardwired cabling to ceiling-mounted access points for whole-home Wi-Fi coverage that actually reaches every room.

Communications cabinet and patch panel setup

Neat, labelled termination of all your cabling into a central rack for easy management.

Security camera (PoE) cabling

Data cabling for Power-over-Ethernet cameras, often run alongside our CCTV installation work.

Cat5e, Cat6 or Cat6a — Which Cable Do You Need?

The type of cable determines how fast and how far your network can run. Here’s how the three common options compare:

Cable Max speed Best for
Cat5e 1 Gigabit (up to 100m) Basic home internet and existing setups. Still fine for most everyday browsing, but no longer the cable of choice for new installs.
Cat6 1 Gigabit (100m); 10 Gigabit (up to ~55m) The standard choice for most Sydney homes. Handles current and near-future internet speeds comfortably.
Cat6a 10 Gigabit (full 100m) Larger homes, offices, and future-proofing. Better shielding against interference for long runs.

Larger properties, commercial premises, dual-occupancies, and inspections in Sydney’s inner suburbs may attract higher rates due to scope and access. Inspections booked before midday come with our 60-minute arrival guarantee, if we don’t make it within the hour, the call-out is free.

If we identify defects you’d like rectified, we provide a fixed-price quote on the spot. There is no obligation to use Moonlight Electrical Group for the rectification work, the inspection report is yours either way.

A 10% seniors discount applies to all inspections, mention it when booking.

When You Need Data Cabling

Most people call Moonlight Electrical for data cabling when Wi-Fi simply isn’t cutting it. The common triggers are:

  • Wi-Fi dropouts while working from home — video calls freezing or dropping in a back room or upstairs office, where the signal struggles to reach.
  • A new build or renovation — the ideal time to run cabling in-wall before the plaster goes up, so points are hidden and tidy.
  • Connecting a study, media room or granny flat — anywhere that needs a fast, stable connection the Wi-Fi can’t reliably deliver.
  • Lag while gaming or buffering on 4K streaming — a hardwired point removes the latency and congestion of a shared wireless network.
  • An office or commercial fit-out — multiple workstations, printers and access points that all need structured cabling back to a central cabinet.
  • A new NBN connection — getting the data point where you want it rather than where the connection box happens to sit.

Older Western Sydney homes are a common case, many have a single phone point and no data cabling at all, so adding hardwired points transforms how the household connects.

How Much Does Data Cabling Cost in Sydney?

The cost of data cabling depends on how many points you need, the cable type, and how easy the cable runs are to access. As a general guide:

  • Single Cat6 data point (accessible run), from approximately $150–$300 including supply and termination.
  • Additional points installed on the same visit, less per point as the call-out and access are already covered.
  • NBN outlet relocation or lead-in, from approximately $150–$350 depending on the run.
  • Whole-home structured cabling for a new build or renovation, from approximately $1,000 upwards depending on the number of points and whether a communications cabinet is required.

Because we quote per job, not per hour, you’ll know the full cost before any work begins and there’s no call-out fee

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a registered cabler to install data cabling?

Yes. In Australia, any fixed telecommunications cabling, including data and network points, must be installed by an ACMA-registered cabler. Moonlight Electrical carries out data cabling with registered cablers, so your installation is compliant and safe. DIY data cabling that connects to the telecommunications network is not permitted.

Should I choose Cat6 or Cat6a cabling?

Cat6 handles 1 Gigabit easily and 10 Gigabit over shorter runs, and suits most Sydney homes. Cat6a maintains 10 Gigabit over the full 100-metre run and has better interference shielding, making it the better choice for larger homes, offices, or anyone future-proofing for high-speed internet. We can advise which is right for your property when we quote.

Can you relocate or add an NBN data point?

Yes. We install new data points, relocate NBN outlets, and run cabling from your NBN connection box to wherever you need internet, a study, home office, media room or another floor. This removes the reliance on patchy Wi-Fi by giving you a hardwired connection.
