Sydney’s Trusted Chandelier and Pendant Light Installers
Chandeliers and pendant lights are statement pieces — they’re often the first thing guests notice when they walk into your home. Getting the installation right matters. A fitting that’s not properly secured, incorrectly wired, or hung at the wrong height can look awkward at best and become a safety hazard at worst.
Moonlight Electrical has been installing chandeliers and decorative light fixtures across Sydney for over 20 years. We’re a family-owned business that treats every installation like it’s in our own home. From a single pendant light over a kitchen island to a multi-tier crystal chandelier in a double-height foyer, we’ve handled it all.
Licensed and insured: NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 373818C. Level 2 ASP accredited. All work compliant with AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules.

What’s Involved in a Chandelier Installation?
Installing a chandelier isn’t as straightforward as swapping out a standard light fitting. Chandeliers are heavier, require stronger mounting hardware, and often need modifications to your existing wiring or ceiling structure. If your home has older wiring — common across Western Sydney suburbs like Merrylands, Parramatta, and Greystanes where many houses were built in the 1960s and 70s — you may need a wiring update before your new fitting can go in safely.
Here’s what we assess on every chandelier installation job:
Ceiling structure and load capacity. Standard ceiling roses are designed for light fittings up to about 4–5 kg. Most chandeliers exceed this, with some weighing 20 kg or more. We assess whether your ceiling can support the weight and install reinforced mounting brackets or ceiling plates where needed. If you have a plasterboard ceiling without adequate bracing, we’ll secure the bracket to a joist or install a timber backing plate for a solid anchor point.
Electrical circuit capacity. Large chandeliers with multiple globes can draw more power than a single lighting circuit is designed for. We check your switchboard and lighting circuit to confirm they can handle the load. If your home still has an older switchboard with ceramic fuses, a switchboard upgrade may be recommended before installation.
Height and positioning. Getting the height right is critical for both aesthetics and safety. Over a dining table, the bottom of the chandelier should sit roughly 75–80 cm above the table surface. In a foyer or stairwell with a high ceiling, we factor in the chain or rod length needed and ensure the fitting is centred properly. For double-height ceilings — common in newer builds through the Hills District, Bella Vista, and around North-West Sydney — we use scaffolding or elevated work platforms to reach the installation point safely.

Chandelier Installation FAQs
Do I need an electrician to install a chandelier?
Yes. In New South Wales, all electrical work — including installing or replacing light fittings — must be carried out by a licensed electrician. This includes connecting any hardwired chandelier or pendant light to your home’s electrical system. DIY electrical work is illegal and invalidates your home insurance. A licensed electrician ensures the installation meets AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules and is safe for your household.
How much does chandelier installation cost in Sydney?
For a standard chandelier on a regular-height ceiling with existing wiring in good condition, installation typically ranges from $200 to $350. Costs increase for heavier fittings that need reinforced mounting, high or vaulted ceilings that require scaffolding, or installations where new wiring or a circuit extension is needed. We always provide a fixed quote before work begins, so you’ll know the exact cost upfront.
Can you install a chandelier on a high ceiling?
Absolutely. We regularly install chandeliers on ceilings up to 6 metres and higher. For ceilings above standard ladder height (approximately 3 metres), we use scaffolding or elevated work platforms to reach the installation point safely. We’ll also ensure the chain or rod length is right so the chandelier sits at the correct height for the room.
Can you install a chandelier where a downlight is?
In most cases, yes. We can convert a downlight opening to a standard light point and install a chandelier or pendant fitting in its place. This involves patching the ceiling around the opening, installing a ceiling plate or rose, and connecting the wiring. If you’re replacing multiple downlights with a single chandelier, we’ll cap off the unused light points and ensure the remaining circuit is properly configured.
Do you supply chandeliers, or do I need to buy my own?
We’re happy to install chandeliers and pendant lights you’ve purchased yourself — whether from a lighting showroom, Beacon Lighting, or online retailers. We don’t retail chandeliers directly, but we can advise on specifications and compatibility before you buy to avoid any surprises on installation day.
How long does a chandelier installation take?
Most standard chandelier installations take between 1 and 2 hours. Larger or heavier fittings, high ceilings, or installations requiring new wiring may take longer. We’ll give you a time estimate when we provide your quote.
